Ocean OC2 outdoor seating by Jørgen & Nanna Ditzel for Mater
Danish furniture company Mater has made a new version of its Ocean outdoor seating collection out of recycled plastic from old beer kegs.
The Ocean collection was created in 1955 by Danish modern design couple Nanna and Jorgen Ditzel and was made of slats of timber veneer.

In 2019, Mater reissued the pieces in recycled ocean plastic and fishing nets. And now, with the help of Carlsberg, the classic collection has been rethought using beer kegs that the brewery would have thrown away otherwise.
“We’re always looking for similar collaborations where we can use upcycled plastic or other waste streams and send them back as furniture or lighting,” Mater founder Henrik Marstrand said.
According to Mlbar, each of the resulting Ocean OC2 chairs emits less than half the CO2 emissions of a comparable design made from virgin plastic.

The Ocean OC2 collection was inspired by Carlsberg’s Together Towards Zero sustainability program. Under this program, the Danish brewer has promised to reduce plastic waste in its breweries and get rid of all carbon emissions by 2030.
The chairs and benches are available in three colours: green, black, and sand. They are designed to be disassembled so that each component can be recycled again.
