The Green Arch Belgian Pavilion In Dubai

Today’s youth is effectively trapped between, on the one hand, the denial of the latest climate-skeptics and, on the other, collapsologists warning us of the impending collapse of our civilization, which is incapable of rapidly reinventing itself to meet the challenges of climate change.

Expo 2020 Dubai, which opens on October 1, 2021, has the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” The affiliated agencies “Vincent Callebaut Architectures” and “assar architects” wanted to use this leitmotif to unite their respective expertise and clearly proclaim to the youth that architects and citizens can now co-build ecological, inclusive, and solidary cities.

The Belgian pavilion is known as “The Green Arch” because it combines dense greenery with futuristic solid wood design. The pavilion aspires to be a model of sustainable development. It is a tribute to a regenerative circular economy, biobased and geo-sourced materials, the incorporation of bioclimatic rules and renewable energies, and the preservation of biodiversity and nature.

This means that “The Green Arch” is built on a “bridge,” resulting in a massive vault with double curvature between its two pillars. This curved vault is created by a universal mathematical minimum surface known as a “hyperbolic paraboloid.” This paraboloid is constructed of CLT – Cross Laminated Timber – with over 5.5 linear kilometres of spruce louvres generating a massive wooden Mashrabiya – which, by rotating 180 degrees, envelops the entire project to better protect it from solar radiation.

Aside from Belgian staples like French fries, waffles, and chocolate merchants, as well as the bistronomic restaurant, the pavilion offers a view of the Belgian landscape in 2050 under the slogan “2050 Smart & Green Belgium.” Beginning at the meeting space under the arch, great Belgian personalities drawn in the style of comic book characters announce the breadcrumb trail of the educational scenography imagined by our partners Facts and Fiction.
