Metropol Parasol – The Largest Wooden Structure In The World
Metropol Parasol situated in Seville, Spain is a wooden structure constructed between the years 2005 to 2011.
Metropol Parasol also famously known as Las Setas de la Encarnacion square is located in the old quarter in Seville in Spain. The architecture was designed by a very talented German architect Jurgen Mayer.
Metropol Parasol – Structure Of The Wooden Structure
The structure measures approximately 150 meters by 70 meters. It stands tall with a height of about 26 meters. It claims to be the largest wooden structure in the whole world.
This famous erection consists of six parasols that resemble giant mushrooms. The design took inspiration from the vaults of the Cathedral of Seville and ficus trees.
The Four Different Levels Of The Structure
The structure is organized into four different levels. The underground level houses an Antiquarium. The place displays Roman and Moorish remains that were discovered on site.
After the underground or zero levels comes the street level is also known as Level 1. It houses a central market. This level is the surface of an open-air public plaza. The place is shaded by wooden parasols that were designed for public events.
The second and third levels include a panoramic terrace housing a restaurant that offers an aesthetic view of the city center.
The Challenges Faced During The Construction Of The Structure
The construction of Metropol Parasol was started on the 26th of June in the year 2005. The construction was started with an estimated cost of 50 million euros. The structure was finally completed in the year 2007.
However, the structure faces some technical difficulties. Engineer Arup brought to the attention of the municipal authorities that the design of the structure was not feasible. According to several calculations, it was noted that the construction violated the limitations of the materials used.

By numerоus estimаtiоns аnd multiрle delаys, the соst оf the соnstruсtiоn went uр tо 100 milliоn eurоs.
The Metrороl Раrаsоl wаs designed with the аim оf рrоviding рedestriаns, shаdes оn а sunny dаy in Seville. Аs а result it wоuld аlsо mаke the squаre used аs а раrking lоt mоre liveаble.
