The Cathedral Of Brasilia – Dedicated to Virgin Mary
The Саthedrаl оf Brаsiliа is а Rоmаn Саthоliс Саthedrаl situаted in Brаzil. The соlоssаl struсture wаs designed by а very tаlented Brаziliаn аrсhiteсt Оsсаr Niemeyer. The grоund-breаking оf the соnstruсtiоn wаs stаrted in Seрtember 1958. Аt this time the соrnerstоne оf the exсeрtiоnаl аrсhiteсture wаs lаid. The struсture wаs finаlly соmрleted in Mаy 1970.
The Cathedral Of Brasilia – The Structural Features
The exceptional structure is hyperboloid and it is made out of 16 concrete columns. Each of these columns weighed approximately 90 tons.
The four bronze sculptures situated in the square access of the cathedral are 3m high. These sculptures represent the four Evangelists; Mathew, Mark Luke, and John. It was created by the famous sculptor Dante Croce in 1968.
The Construction Of The Cathedral Of Brasilia
Outside the cathedral, there are four large bells. The cathedral entrance houses a pillar with passages depicting the life of Mary, painted by Athos.
The cathedral roof is surrounded by a deep reflecting pool which measures 12m in width and 16 inches deep. This pool helps to cool the cathedral. The visitors have to walk past this pool to enter the cathedral. The visitors have to enter the cathedral through a dark tunnel and come out into a well-lit space adorned with a glass roof.
The external roof of the cathedral is built of sixteen pieces of fiber glasses. Beneath this roof, there is a 2000 square meter of stained glass suspended.
The Spectacular Decoration Of The Cathedral of Brasilia
The nave of the cathedral is decorated with sculptures of angels hung with steel cables. Pope Paul VI donated the altar. There is a small chapel under the principal altar. It can be accessed via steps from either side and from behind the altar.
The Cathedral of Brasilia can accommodate up to 4000 people. The baptistery is situated on the left side of the entrance. This place can be entered via the cathedral or through a spiral staircase from the plaza entrance.
The Cathedral of Brasilia is devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. The cathedral of Brasilia is officially known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Of Aparecida. The artistic interpretation behind this architectural marvel is it seems like the structure is reaching up to heaven.
