The Evolution Of Indian Architecture

Architecture is a field of creative study that is heavily influenced by culture, history, and religion. Buildings and structures tend to calibrate these themes as a part of them, which results in constant evolution with time. This is what defines us as a society and leaves cultural imprints for generations to come.

Indian Architecture: Early Traces And Beginnings

Since its inception around 6500 BC, the earliest recordings state major architectural references in south India; all the way from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. Colonization also played a major role and contributed to architecture in ways more than one. Towns and villages started creating grids with brick and mortar and a drainage system. This satisfied their fundamental need of getting a concrete form of shelter. It was observed that more often than not, on these structures there were imprints and carvings of individuals and animals in a very basic, stick figure-like art form. This art form was later known as Warli Painting and is practiced even today.

Rock Cut Architecture And Its Impact On Storages

Despite some form of growth, storage spaces would always be an issue since there was tremendous cultivation of crops, livestock, and general goods that needed to be taken care of on a regular basis. For this, step-wells and underground storage systems were created and by cutting up caves and carving small pathways between places. This form of architecture was known as rock-cut architecture and started seeing a quick escalation all over India; predominately in Bihar.

Temple Architecture And How It Affects Society

Apart from these two forms, another form of architecture that took prominence and gathered momentum was temple architecture. Complex designs, different elements, and patterns were created to observe the ultimate form of worship. Clay idols and gold plates were used to decorate the temples which attracted locals as well as traders. Tourists were added to the overall growth and development of their locality. It also became a major form of employment and helped generate revenue which was eventually compounded to form more of these. The Golden Temple in Amritsar (Punjab)  is the biggest testament to a beautiful and intricate structure that stands the test of time even today.
