Raj Bhavan in Kolkata is the resident of the Governor of the state. Before the time of independence, it was called the Government House.
After the power shifted from East India Company to the British raj the Raj Bhavan got declared as the official address of the Viceroy of India.
The Architecture Of Raj Bhavan In Kolkata

The Raj Bhavan is constructed in Neo-classical architecture style with a blend of Baroque overtones. This structure had gone through several changes since the times of Lord Wellesly. In the year 1860 the then Viceroy Lord Elgin installed a dome made of metal. Later electricity and lift were brought in by Lord Curzon. The ornate tiny lift works efficiently to date.
The Plan Of Raj Bhawan in Kolkata, West Bengal
The design of Raj Bhavan consists of a core centrally positions with four wings diverging in different directions. The wings lodge several offices and residential quarters. The designs of these wings are planned meticulously allowing natural ventilation.
The central core houses the staterooms. These rooms can be accessed via a flight of stairs on the North. The portico on the south is encircled with colonnaded verandah with a dome atop of it. The entire premises are encompassed by a balustrade wall. The gateway of this architecture is spectacularly designed in the form of a grand arch.
The Interior Of Raj Bhavan
The central area of Raj Bhavan has huge halls with corridors on all four sides. Each of these radiates to detached wings. The wings accommodate a house in itself. There are approximately around sixty rooms in Raj Bhavan in Kolkata apart from the usual public halls, banquets, portico, etc. However, the residential parts are segmented into four suites.
The plan of the Raj Bhavan is unique, It depicts a standing man, holding two boxes in his hands. The front façade of the architecture is facing in North-East directions. Calcutta is known as the richest, largest most splendidly elegant city of India due to its rich cultural heritage and spectacular architecture.
