When the traditional Vernacular style meets the 21st Century Contemporary style
Vernacular architecture is a region-specific architecture style that solely depends on the techniques and materials that are locally used. Vernacular architecture can be blended with contemporary style to get a more exotic vernacular style as the outcome.
The contemporary style makes a structure more high-tech, and progressive. This approach when combined with the use of traditional materials and practical techniques can lead to more sustainable construction.
The methodology of incorporating vernacular dogmas into building more futuristic designs is what we call ‘contemporary vernacular’.
Some of the examples of ‘Contemporary Vernacular’ architecture
Cuckoo House in Vietnam
The name of the house is Cuckoo house because the inspiration of this structure is taken from a cuckoo clock. The house is clad with brick walls that are found locally. This gives the building an essence of vernacular-style architecture. Natural ventilation is made on the exterior brick walls. The semicircular glazing brings the contemporary style into play. The semi-enclosed courtyard and the breezy passage ensure to keep the interior temperature low.
Wadden Sea Center in Denmark
The Wadden Sea Center in Denmark is an extremely sleek design that consolidates into the horizon of the sea. It is a minimalistic plan that makes the structure look clean and aesthetic. The roof of this structure is thatched and has a Thermo wood exterior. The culmination of vernacular style along with the contemporary design is in perfect synchronization with its surroundings. The design creates a symphony with nature encircling it.
Chaumiere in France
Chaumiere is a cottage in France. Its unique design looks straight out of a fairytale. The quirky thatched roof is covered with a clay bed. Several irises are planted on the top of the roof joinery. The roots of these plants help to bind the reed ends of the thatched roof. The beautiful garden filled with colorful flowers surrounds the house giving it a warm and vibrant look.
This traditional style has become more popular over the years. This new style is less superficial and more holistic. Nowadays exotic vernacular style architecture is an inspiration for many architects to create progressive designs as well as something that meets human needs. The materials and resources are not only easily accessible but it also helps in building high energy-efficient, sustainable designs.
